PITTI IMMAGINE: The 'Fifties

The Center of Florence and the Golden Era of the Sala Bianca

In July 1952 the fashion shows were moved to the runway of the Sala Bianca in the Palazzo Pitti where they remained until 1982. Nine fashion houses (including Capucci) and sixteen firms that featured more sporty wear and boutique items showed women's clothing in a setting gleaming with Neoclassical chandeliers and stuccowork.

Giorgini had understood that Italian fashion did indeed have a chance against the hegemony of French High Fashion thanks to creativity, fit, simplicity of cut, fine materials and the clever use of color and ornaments. It was not just a question of lower prices: Italian fashion was, above all, in harmony with the new lifestyles that the first real generation of working women was creating in the United States and Northern Europe.

The year 1954 marked the founding of the Centro di Firenze per la Moda Italiana (CFMI) the organization which, from that moment on, would sponsor all the events. By 1955 there were 500 buyers and 200 journalists attending what had become Europe's biggest appointment in the industry.
