The new Guide de l’Espresso 2018

A special presentation becomes an unmissable event for the protagonists of the Italian wine and food industry par excellence, which this year celebrates an important anniversary: the fortieth edition of the Restaurant Guide.

The rendezvous is Thursday 19 October at the Stazione Leopolda in Florence for the Pitti Immagine event dedicated to the presentation of the Guide de l’Espresso 2018. Starting at 11:00 a.m. the event will showcase the best Italian wines and celebrate the leading Made in Italy restaurants, with the presentation of the new edition of the guides that, over the years, have become an undisputed reference point of the Italian winemaking world and new Italian cuisine: “I VINI D’ITALIA 2018” (Guide to Italian Wines 2018) and “I RISTORANTI D’ITALIA 2018” (Italian Restaurants 2018).  In the afternoon, starting at 2:30 p.m., the twelfth edition of the auction of Fine Wines and Spirits organized by PANDOLFINI Auction House will be held. 

In the exceptional setting of the Stazione Leopolda, the day’s events will be presented by the CEO of Pitti Immagine Raffaello Napoleone, and the editor of the Espresso guides Enzo Vizzari
The event is organized by Pitti Immagine, under the patronage of the Regione Toscana and the Comune di Firenze and with the collaboration of Caraiba Luxury, Acqua Lilia the Pandolfini Auction House, and at this edition with the sponsorship of Opel.
The special layout that will greet the guests is designed by architect Alessandro Moradei.
 
Here are some of the events that will be held during the day of 19 October:    
_ the opening, at 11:00 a.m., will include the presentation of the “I Vini d’Italia 2018” guide. The guide, which is curated by Andrea Grignaffini and Antonio Paolini, is renewed in its content, as the only one of its kind in Italy with complete consumer orientation. As with the last edition, it is a practical instrument that presents a focus on three distinct classifications: “100 wines to drink right now”, “100 wines to age” and “100 wines to buy”. These are joined by a new and previously unreleased chapter: “100 wines to try again”, an unclassifiable section conceived with the aim of providing consumers with yet another perspective on wine, in terms of its evolution, with aged vintages (from 2013 to 1985) and the labels responsible for shaping the industry’s history.
 
_ at 12:00 p.m., the “I Ristoranti d’Italia 2018” guide curated by Enzo Vizzarri will be presented in celebration of an important anniversary, the fortieth edition of the guide. 1979-2018, thirty-nine years of the very best of Italy’s restaurants, with the first few pages of this special guide dedicated to a recap of the industry’s most historically important moments and news stories: the precursors of an epochal turning point, today’s and yesterday’s experts, emerging young talents and the trends of the future, immortalized for all time by the special classification released each year by the guide. Brand new to this edition, after last year’s revolutionary elimination of the traditional ‘twentieths of a point’ scoring system, is the introduction of “golden hats” attributed to the “new classics”: the ten restaurants that have contributed the most significantly to changing the face of Italian cuisine. The new guide does not just present a picture of the world of Italian dining, but the very best of Italy’s leading restaurants:  around 2,000 venues selected from more than 200 thousand candidates, as leaders in their own individual categories: from the more common restaurant to the “5 hat” rated venue (the highest possible score, with five restaurants receiving 5 hats this year), from the enorestaurant to ethnic cuisine, and a special insert dedicated to “The best Italian pizzerias”.
 
_ at the end of the ceremony, from 1:00 p.m., there will be a tasting of the best wines of each of the classifications proposed by the “I Vini d’Italia 2018” guide.
 
In the afternoon, starting at 2:30 p.m., the by now celebrated auction of Fine Wines and Spirits, organized annually on this occasion by Pandolfini Auction House, will be held.  This auction has become an unmissable event for members of the trade and for fine wine enthusiasts by virtue of the catalog that presents a special selection of valuable lots, which are divided up between Italian and French wines: the catalog of French wines offers a wide selection of bottles – Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Champagne – with the most prestigious Domaine and Château represented. Among the Italian wines on offer, the catalog offers an especially rich selection of premium bottles, including many Supertuscans of various vintages and the great wines of Piedmont. The auction will continue the following day (20 October) in the historic rooms of Palazzo Ramirez Montalvo in Florence: in the morning, an auction of the finest Italian wines par excellence coming from just one privately owned collection will be held. In the afternoon, the catalog will feature a selection of Italian wines belonging to various private collectors and enthusiasts, who have conserved their bottles in the very best conditions.
