“Il Capriccio e la Ragione. Eleganze del Settecento europeo” [Whimsy and Reason. Elegance in Eighteenth Century Europe], is the title of the exhibition organized by the Fondazione Museo del Tessuto di Prato on the theme of the development of styles and tastes in the eighteenth century’s artistic culture. Running through to April 2018, visitors to Pitti Uomo will have ample opportunity to see the show.
The exhibition has been made possible thanks to the prestigious collaboration of the Museo della Moda e del Costume of the Gallerie degli Uffizi – a collaboration that springs from a broader and more highly structured agreement that the Fondazione and the Gallerie degli Uffizi signed on the occasion of the exhibition; the Museo Stibbert in Florence and the Museo Studio del Tessuto della Fondazione Ratti in Como, as well as other prestigious public and private institutions permitting the organization of a unique and innovative event exploring the rich and complex eighteenth century.
Over one hundred items – fabrics, women’s and men’s clothing, porcelain, shoes, buttons, gloves, hats and other clothing accessories, paintings and engravings, tell the story and accurately explain the continuous stylistic changes that unfolded during that period, from exoticism and compositional “whimsies” in the first half of the century to the austere forms of neoclassical decorations.
The juxtaposition of textiles and the most diverse types of artifacts and artistic techniques offers the visitor a complete overview of styles with examples of eighteenth century textile production such as bizarre, chinoiserie, dentelles, and revel just to mention a few. The exhibits create an ongoing dialogue among clothing, fashion accessories and other furnishing elements.
The exhibition is staged in the room of antique textiles in the Museo del Tessuto di Prato. The museum, and the Biblioteca Comunale Lazzerini are located in the former Fabbrica Campolmi, one of the most outstanding examples of Tuscany’s textile industrial archeology (8,500 square meters) that the city of Prato salvaged and converted into a municipal cultural center.
The main sponsor of the exhibition is ESTRA, the Tuscan holding company that is one of the top ten industrial groups supplying energy in Italy.
