THE TEMPORARY EVENTS AT THE FORTEZZA
Alternative Set is the program of temporary events and installations in special places on the Fortezza da Basso grounds that are staged by a select number of designers. These events are not held at the stands, but at the key intersections on the Pitti Uomo map. As always, they will test new and different communications and promotional methods that are fast, incisive and able to surprise. The names at this edition are: Jimi Roos + D.A.T.E., Mauna Kea, motherSon by SeeMe, and Norwegian Rain’s T-Michael with Ralph Vaessen. The first of these special site-specific events dedicated to this edition’s theme will be That’s PITTICOLOR! Opening Performance, curated by Angelo Figus.
THAT'S PITTICOLOR! OPENING PERFORMANCEBack to top
Pitti Filati is synonymous with color and material, it inspires trends and colors for the knitwear industry. If Pitti Uomo is celebrating color, Pitti Filati responds with colors and knits. Curated by fashion designer Angelo Figus, the That’s Pitti Color! Opening Performance will be the perfect union between the two fairs, symbolically closing the circle of the initial idea, the trend and the finished product presented by the exhibitors. This performance will bring Made in Italy excellence to center stage with a selection of important stitches and knits for the season – and they will comprise large carpets rolled down the outdoor staircase leading to the Upper Level of the Main Pavilion. Presented against a soundtrack prepared by architect Oliviero Baldini, the That’s Pitticolor! Opening performance will also open the first of several colored smoke exhibitions that will punctuate the four days of the fair at different times.
JIMI ROOS + D.A.T.EBack to top
Inspired by color – the theme of Pitti Uomo 88 - Jimi Roos and D.A.T.E. will present a live performance based on street art. Working to music, artist and illustrator Giuseppe di Carlo will create a huge graffiti. All around him there will be installations and wooden blocks displaying their new footwear collection that combines the innovative embroidery techniques developed by Swedish-born Jimi Roos with the world of D.A.T.E. premium sneakers. And then at the end, the two brands’ stenciled logos will make a surprise appearance, impressed on natural wood.

WEDNESDAY 17 JUNE
Making its absolute debut at Pitti Uomo 88, the collection will come to life through a special performance that brings together the inspirations and creativity of Dutch designer Ralph Vaessen, and the innovative bespoke tailoring of T-Michael’s menswear. In addition, a short film centered on the concepts of doors that open will tell about the infinite ways that a designer and an artist can work together. At the end of the screening, Pitti People will have the opportunity to be immortalized wearing the capsule collection’s sunglasses.

THURSDAY 18 JUNE
11:00 a.m. Main Pavilion Forecourt
At Pitti Uomo 88, Mauna Kea will be presenting the new 2016 S/S collection characterized by precious stone and floral prints. Ever since the brand was founded, it has been characterized by a free spirit that never forgets its “marine” origins, an eye on what’s happening now, skilful work on fabrics and utmost attention to research on graphics and textures – all part of the brand’s DNA. Put all this together – and that’s the idea for the Mauna Kea Alternative Set. In the middle of the forecourt, a maxi-size block of stacked textured paper with the new Mauna Kea prints will be the base for huge origami figures – some of which will be folded on the spot – that will come to life in an interactive dialogue with the clothes on display. Camouflage components will make the whole operation a thing of joy, like a trompe l’œil so that the set will come to life like a real shoot in progress.
