Kid Size

The material world of childhood explores the universe of children and its relationship with the adult world

Fortezza da Basso

Kid Size. The material world of childhood explores the universe of children and its relationship with the adult world through the toys, everyday artifacts and furniture created for little ones in different eras and in different cultures. It is a world in miniature, but it is often complex: it is a world of relationships among people, ideas, objects and spaces. Via the exhibit it opens itself to interesting questions about children: how they learn, their physical and psychological development, intimacy and order within the family, control, autonomy, personal territory and above all, the role of play. Focused on five major themes - sleeping, basic functions, play, mobility and learning - the exhibit features items, furnishings, drawings, photographs and original settings, from a Biedermeier kindergarten to a Shaker community from new England, from a Iatmul home in Papua New Guinea to a Chinese kindergarten.

The more than 150 items arranged in a “path” layout of about 700 square meters, come from museums and collections around the world. In addition Kid Size features one video that presents archive materials on children’s games from the ‘Twenties to the present. Each section will be accompanied by an original sound design created exclusively by Daniele Landi for the Italian venue. The exhibition will also include a play area for children – with furnishings, accessories and play equipment by IKEA - that is an integral part of the show.

With this program, Pitti Immagine Bimbo is pursuing its cultural research on the universe of children in parallel with the trade fair which is expanding from its original core of textiles and clothing to encompass furnishings and design items for children.
