Antonio Marras' first menswear fashion show, exclusive for Pitti Uomo
20 June 2002, Torre del Gallo, Firenze
The fashion event of the 62nd edition of Pitti Immagine Uomo will take place at 9:30 p.m. on the evening of Thursday, 20 June, the opening day of the exhibition. It is the first showing of the first men’s collection by Antonio Marras and the venue will be the extraordinary Torre del Gallo castle overlooking Florence that has been closed to the public for over fifty years.
Antonio Marras is one of the most interesting designers in Italy at the time. He made his debut with his women’s prêt-à-porter collection at Milano Collezioni in March 1999 and since then the general public and the international press have acclaimed him as one of the few authentic contemporary Italian talents. Clothing by Marras is fascinating, with an unmistakable creative flair linked to the traditions of his native Sardinia and filled with references to other cultures and eras. It is a style in which skill is predominant, a style that proceeds by layers (of fabrics, embroideries, ornaments), and where a garment is often a unique item - that can never be repeated - like those made long time ago.
The venue for this event is just as extraordinary: the Torre del Gallo castle. It was rebuilt by the great antique dealer Stefano Bardini at the beginning of the XX century using only pieces from villas and palazzos. The castle has been closed to the public for over fifty years and is being reopened just for this occasion. It is a place filled with history: for decades the gardens were an outdoor gallery of antique art where Bardini showed the sculptures in his collection. The tower is the highest structure among all the hills around Florence.
The 20 June event is a long-awaited first for one of the leading names on the contemporary Italian fashion scene. It is also a great promotional event that once again confirms Pitti Immagine’s dual role as an active research laboratory on men’s fashions and the ideal stage for the most important events in the industry.
