PITTI UOMO 96 BUYER INTERVIEWS
Rodolphe Nantas, menswear buyer, The Webster (USA):
It is always a pleasure to be at Pitti Uomo. A beautiful atmosphere, an increasingly interesting offering and an ever more international public. Pitti Uomo transmits this melting pot to the whole city, also thanks to the extraordinary calendar of events presented at this edition. The Guest Designers, Givenchy and Sterling Ruby were incredible! Also very interesting was the exhibition organized at Palazzo Pitti that looked back at the history of the event together with that of menswear. At this edition I was looking for streetwear collections and my expectations were amply satisfied, especially in the Scandinavian Manifesto project. Impeccable organization.
Sonja Xiao Long, menswear buyer, Alter (China):
Pitti Uomo is not simply a fair, it’s a lot more thanks to its very strong international appeal and the calendar of events that is unique in the world. And Florence is an open air museum: it is wonderful to be here. Far beyond a business-oriented trade show, it is an event with a unique atmosphere. I really appreciated the attention reserved for Chinese buyers and the strategy implemented by Pitti Immagine: the invitation to Asian buyers and the visibility reserved for the brands’ collections through the Guest Nation China space. Both the offering in the Main Pavilion and the proposals in the sections dedicated to the streetwear world were very interesting. Perfect organization!
Christopher Casuga, proprietor and creative director, Contraband (Canada):
A great energy with a mixture of streetwear and a dandy style that I liked a lot. I perceived big growth in terms of international buyers: all the most important names, from boutiques to department stores, are at the fair. I am interested in the various forms of menswear: I appreciate the dynamism of the Main Pavilion but, for the experimental streetwear, I never miss the proposals in Touch! together with Unconventional and the Pop Up Stores, really useful and innovative focuses. I think it is necessary to visit Pitti Uomo for at least a couple of days in order to activate contacts and discussions with other sector insiders to accurately research the emerging brands. The Sterling Ruby show was incredible.
Guillaume Steinmetz, co-founder and buyer, The Broken Arm (Paris):
A truly special atmosphere: I believe that it is the only fair capable of offering similar emotions. Moreover the perfect timing – straight after London and before Milan Fashion Week – attracts a large number of international buyers. We have noticed the great evolution of Pitti Uomo over the years: initially the focus was directed towards the world of tailoring, now it embraces all the styles of men’s fashion and dedicates plenty of space to research into both sportswear and streetwear. People experience the fair as a unique event and its energy can be felt all around the city! My favorite sections are the Main Pavilion and Scandinavian Manifesto.
Sunny Patel, Menswear Buyer, Tem-plate (Portugal):
Pitti Uomo is an unmissable rendezvous, it represents the start of the season and every area is truly a “must”. It is one of the most important fairs on a global level where it is possible to see the collections of the best brands and also enjoy an enthralling atmosphere crammed with special events. The world of menswear is moving in many directions, it is a cycle: I feel that tailoring is coming back, although street is fundamental. The sections I appreciate the most include, in particular, Scandinavian Manifesto and I GO OUT, with its incredible editing.
Herbert Hofmann, menswear buyer, Highsnobiety (Germany):
An excellent blend of classic and contemporary, lots of very interesting brands and wonderful energy. I really liked this year’s layout: it felt more like being in a tropical garden than a fair, a perfect setting for social moments. I really like inhaling the world of contemporary craftsmanship in the Main Pavilion as well as the more street sections like Futuro Maschile, Touch, Unconventional and Urban Panorama. A really strong line-up of events, better than all the other sector fairs: the names of the Guest Designers are incredible: Givenchy and Sterling Ruby. And I liked the outfits of the Pitti Boys & Girls: who wouldn’t want to work in such a cool uniform?
Federica Montelli, Head of Fashion, La Rinascente:
A beautiful edition with a calendar of events that revealed extraordinary locations. Taking part in Pitti Uomo is crucial for getting a complete overview of the trends for the season. I really appreciated the offering of accessories, the wealth of inspiration provided by I GO OUT with the dedicated fashion show and the focus on the designers from China. I also unearthed lots of new names in the worlds of Futuro Maschile and Unconventional.
