OFF-WHITE c/o VIRGIL ABLOH™
@ Pitti Immagine Uomo 92
“In a season that’s mixing the traditional hierarchies among fashion, streetwear and role distinctions”, says Lapo Cianchi, Pitti Immagine director of communications & events, “Virgil Abloh has transformed his own lifestyle into a successful brand. He has led Off-White to full stylistic maturity without, however, losing his, sometimes very immediate and impudent, brashness that made his name in the beginning. An architect and engineer, raised in the United States, the child of immigrants from Ghana, who became creative director, indefatigable DJ and entertainer, and now there’s this legend about his ubiquity: who knows…maybe here in Florence we will discover that there is more than one Virgil Abloh, or perhaps three, or four…”.
OFF-WHITE c/o VIRGIL ABLOH™ will present the menswear collection for S/S 2018 along with a selection from the women’s pre-collection. Thursday, 15 June at 9:30 p.m..
“It’s with great honor that I will be debuting my work as part of the Pitti Immagine Uomo 92. I recognize this platform amongst the most important arenas for recording fashion history over the years and it’s my goal to add a unique chapter to that story” - Virgil Abloh.
Born in Rockford, Illinois in 1980 - Virgil Abloh is an architect, creative director and designer.
After earning a degree in civil engineering he completed a Master's degree in architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. It was here that he learned not only about design principles but also about the concept of collaborative working. He studied a curriculum devised by Mies van der Rohe on a campus he had designed. Abloh soon took on the role as a creative director for Kanye West and West's creative think tank “Donda”. Over the years, he collaborated with multiple artists like Nick Knight, Riccardo Tisci, Kim Jones, Takashi Murakami, Olivier Rousteing, Giuseppe Zanotti, George Condo and worked with Silvia Venturini at Fendi.
He counts the Renaissance painter Caravaggio and the architects Mies van der Rohe and Rem Koolhaas as major influences, and has modeled his career on the Bauhaus principle of a collective of like-minded creatives. “He has an acute aesthetic sensibility”, says the artist George Condo, who painted the five album covers for West’s 2010 My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
Established in 2013, Off-White™ is defining the grey area between black and white as a color.
Under the brand name - whose design studio is based in Milan - seasonal collections of men’s and women’s clothing, objects, furniture, and publications are articulating a current culture vision.
