In a moment still characterized by uncertainty and a great desire for recovery, two contrasting and opposing forces seem to always regulate the dynamics of the coming season: caution and optimism, red and green, stop and go, one way and no entry, hot and cold, right and left, down there and up there, above and under, fast and slow, inside and outside, stop and go, surpass and align.
In a universe that recovers, starts back up, departs and launches itself forward, multiplying messages and information on where to go and how to get there…Pitti Immagine would simply like to do things its own way. Having fun and being enjoyed, giving precise directions while leaving things open to interpretation, triggering off a light, yet effective and graphic game, where the arrival is simply the next starting point. In other words, a never-ending series of starting points and point of arrivals, a sense of perpetual motion and experimentation for the coming season. These signals multiply, overlapping one another, aligning themselves and distancing themselves, without ever leading anywhere if not towards a movement that is constantly, dynamically, and energetically projected towards the future; with the ability to change its approach to coincide with the slightest change. In this context and context of activity for the coming season that will see the Pitti Immagine shows develop the theme of orientation and direction, the theme of Pitti Immagine Filati interprets one specific aspect. That which is put onto paper. Writing is the way in which we orient ourselves in space; paper, the virtual and real space of our project, but also of our development, growth, learning, understanding, exchange, and communication. In graphology, paper is a symbol of the cosmos. The horizontal line represents the passing of time. The vertical line is the ego. The verb is that which appears. The left is the arising ego, the past, femininity. The right is the father, the active part, the future, creation, and masculinity. Above are laws, ambitions, idealism, and modesty. Below is the earth, terrestrial, darkness, impulse, intolerance, and the need for immediate satisfaction. For orienting ourselves on paper as we do in life.
ALPHABET
Pitti Filati dedicates the spring/summer 2024 to the importance of dialogue and communication. In a profoundly changed world where evolution is faster than thought and even conceptualization itself, learning to speak a new language seems the strongest thematic lead to follow in this historic moment. Language, writing, and the alphabet are all modern and ancient instruments of exchange and understanding, as well as belonging to a specific culture and preserving it for posterity. On the Tower of Babel of information and declarations that pulls us in all directions while tying us into it, exists a society of images where everyone posts, writes, speaks, but no one listens. In the projection towards a dystopic future in a “new age” world supported by one language, one government, and one religion; globalization seems a limitation and restriction that must be accepted, instead of a possibility. Reflecting on language, communication, and interaction at another speed and with real respect for the differences and primary codes of every culture and their meeting points becomes especially interesting. The word “alphabet” comes from combining the first two letters of the Greek alphabet: Alfa, the first vowel and Beta, the first consonant. Alphabet systems are among the most widespread forms of writing in the world and almost all alphabets in the world use the script of Latin writing. Phoenician is the most ancient of the modern alphabets. The alphabet is a combination of primary codes we will explore, serving as the inspiration for three thematic and aesthetic groups: the Greek alphabet, the Roman alphabet, and the Arabian alphabet, which sum up the three spirits of the season. The letters of the alphabet will also be filled with references to cultures, places, sounds, and the colors of their respective origins.
