Windsor collection

A new collection of contemporary photography including works from the 70s and 80s

Stazione Leopolda

January 11 - February 3 2002

An extraordinary gathering of photographs realized by fashion artists and photographers who began making a name for themselves starting in the 90s. This essential installation - inspired by the exhibition methods of contemporary art – will be accompanied by an opening event with the participation of Sam Samore, one of the most interesting artists of his generation.

The windsor.collection is a new collection of contemporary photography, which takes as its starting-point the artistic concepts of the 90s. At the same time, it includes works from the 70s and 80s which are of art-historical importance, and which in turn are linked to the visual culture of today. In other words, the windsor.collection is intended to document the way in which images migrate between different visual cultures, influence one another and interact.

To date, the windsor.collection includes well over 150 works all of which are being exhibited at the Stazione Leopolda. Artists of the windsor.collection are among others: Cindy Sherman, Philip-Lorca DiCorcia, Nan Goldin, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Helmut Newton, Marcelo Krasilcic, Inez van Lamsweerde, David Shrigley, Vanessa Beecroft, Ugo Rondinone, Sylvie Fleury, Barbara Visser, Roe Etheridge.

In his artistic work Sam Samore is a fantastic fabulist. He invents stories, situations, and compositions. He twists facts and spreads myths. Samore’s operative modes – photography and fairy tales – function independently but still have an effect on each other. Samore examines neither content nor narrative curves and their stringency. Much more through the application of a consistently seductive and ephemeral aesthetic, the artist tests the unpredictability of perception. Sam Samore has had major solo shows at the Kunsthalle Zurich, the De Appel Foundation Amsterdam, the Casino Luxemburg, the Centre National de la Photographie Paris. He has done editorial work for Harpers Bazaar and special projects for Yves Saint Laurent and Sonia Rykiel and published many books among them “Allegories of Beauty” and “The Adventure”.

During the opening on January 10 New York artist Sam Samore will stage a multi-performative shoot with the working title “Love, Death, Beauty” involving actors, performers and models. As a pop-spectacle the opening becomes part of the narration. Windsor’s guests are potential models and actors. The resulting photographic narration will be published in the booklet # 6.
The exhibition is realized in collaboration with Pitti Immagine.
